We can’t help but rave about the Hyundai Kona. We’ve been getting more requests than we can count, and the car itself has been getting more hype than when McDonald’s got rid of McPizza. The SUV for the city has been getting incredible reviews across the industry. Here’s what eager reviewers have to say.

It Hits all the Marks

Recently reviewed in the popular First Drive AutoTrader segment, the Kona is touted as coming in ahead of the competition with the power to do just that.

“An excellent 1.6L turbocharged engine good for 175 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. That engine drives all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). That means class-leading power.”

The Kona’s excellent braking power was noted, as well as positive feelings towards our SUV’s handling and steering. Our ever-popular Hyundai technology led the pack and was the weight of this attention. Reviewers noted the that the Kona’s road manners were “superb” and that the vehicle’s suspension won against every test.

“Where the Kona really shines over the competition is in space. It feels much bigger than it is on paper, and I was impressed by how good both rows felt. The ergonomics are spot on, everything is easy to reach, and Hyundai’s infotainment system is spectacular.”

Some of FirstDrive’s favourite remarks included:

  • The record function that allows you to record SiriusXM radio
  • AndroidAuto and Apple CarPlay availability on all trim levels
  • Visibility - the compact SUV has excellent visibility without distraction
  • It doesn’t feel like a subcompact vehicle - the Kona is sturdy to the SuperStructure bone
  • A spacious interior with more room than expected

It Ticks all the Right Boxes

Driving.ca had nothing but good things to say about our Kona. Out of the gate the cabin’s craftsmanship was noted, as well as our onboard infotainment system. The large touch display delights both our in-person test drivers as well as those at Driving.ca.

Better than the other guys, the Kona has equipment that is standard on all trim levels that you would need to pay extra for with other manufacturers. None of that here, just pure, simple, and elegant technology. Navigation and wireless phone charging, as well as BlueLink connectivity and the heads-up display impressed the folks at Driving.ca. Beyond that, the cargo space wins for the class, and a pair of adults can fit in the back.

“The good news is all but the Essential model get rear sonic parking sensors, blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and lane departure warning as standard equipment."

It’s More Fun Than You’d Expect

We know that sometimes smaller vehicles come with smaller expectations, but with the Kona that just isn’t the case. Test drivers at the Globe and Mail ended their roundup with: The Kona's cute, it starts cheap and – with the turbo – it's more fun to drive than you'd expect.”

Their drivers initially anticipated that the interior would be quirky, but instead found it clean and functional. They beamed that the touchscreen was brighter than those of the competition, the seats are comfortable, and that the cabin is quiet.

In terms of engine functionality and power, G&M remarked that the 1.6L turbo and the 2.0 both have more power than competing SUVs. The turning was sharp and peppy. Just like driving.ca, the included standard equipment impressed journalists. At the event attended, drag racers pitted the Kona against the HR-V and C-HR. Guess who won? The Kona. Hyundai has expressed confidence in this vehicle and its onboard power with both engine options, and reviewers saw this firsthand.

Everyday Reviews test drove the Kona to Vancouver Island and found that our subcompact is more than ready to take on the competition. They found the 2018 Hyundai Kona attractive, noted the sleek and separated headlights and the sharp underside trim. In the same vein as the folks at Driving.ca, Everyday Reviews called it a “looker” and proceeded to note the high-level included features and quality materials used inside of the vehicle. They found the vehicle to be a comfortable size and recognized that SuperStructure used the full length of the space available on the base.

The biggest thing that we noticed these reviews all had in common was the surprise. Kona is putting a new expectation behind the term subcompact, and in a good way. Reviewers noted that the vehicle exceeded their expectations in power, design, and quality. At Integrity Hyundai, we’re proud of the vehicles that we sell and love when third-parties recognize what we’re doing. The Kona, just like our other Hyundai vehicles, boats impressive included technology and features.
